Objective: To teach students what hotspots are as well as the characteristics of these critical habitats.
Materials: Computer with Internet access
Procedure: Go to the website www.biodiversityhotspots.org.
Choose one of the biodiversity hotspot to study South America
Analysis:
1. List one animal and one plant that are native to this area.
The Colombian grebe and the Andean bromeliad.2. In which country is this hotspot located?
This hotspot spreads throughout Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
3. Is this country a developing or a developed nation?
Argentina and Chile are developed countries and Columbia, Ecuador, & Peru are developing nations.
4. What human activity is contributing to the biodiversity loss in this area?
Agriculture, deforestation, dams, road building, seasonal burning, grazing, agriculture, mining, and fuelwood collection are the human activities contributing to the biodiversity loss in the area.
5. What, if anything, is being done to protect this hotspot?
Identifying the endangered animals is leading to a more monitoring and enforced areas of the Tropical Andes hotspot.
