Borneo Video Reflection Questions
1: How does the story of Borneo exemplify the idea of ecosystems and the interaction of organisms (specifically the importance of all organisms in that ecosystem)?
The story of Borneo exemplifies the idea and interaction of organisms because it shows us how all of the animals get affected by loss of other animals, and the actions that must be done. In this case, DDT is the main problem here. That's affecting all of the animals, and ecosystem. Once one animals has fallen, the rest do too.
2: How does the story exemplify how humans (in our attempt to fix one thing), cause unforeseeable problems in ecosystems?
The story shows how human cause unforeseeable problems in ecosystems because they think there is a problem and try to fix it but don't realize that.
3: Explain how a toxin in a food web will harm some while killing others- why did the mosquitos and cats die while other things lived? (hint: research bioaccumulation & biomagnification)
A toxin in a food web will harm some and kill others because some animals might have a defense system that others don't and therefore, killing the animals that don't have it.
4: Explain why you think DDT has been banned in the U.S. but is still in production and used in countries all over the world.
Why I think DDT has been banned in the U.S. because it was harming a lot of animals and ecosystems. DDTs are not good for the ecosystem. Production is still used in countries all over the world because it helps them produce whatever they're making faster, and all of that stuff is sent here, in the U.S. which is easier for us.
5: If DDT is still being used around the world, but not in the U.S.- are we still exposed to it? (Discuss).
Yes, although the U.S. is not using it, we're still exposed to it because products from around the world that use DDT are sent here, and we're exposed to them. Although DDT is banned here, we're exposed to it by all of the other shipping exports from throughout the world that may still use DDT.
6: Do you think scientists should have sprayed the island with DDT? If not, what should they have done about the Malaria issue?
I don't think scientist should have used DDT because it harmed the whole ecosystem. Scientist should have put more effort into finding an antibiotic for Malaria instead of destroying everything.
