Wetlands
A: List the Major ideas, concepts or key points-point by point
The author is telling us that wetlands play a huge role in the ecosystem for many reasons. Wetlands moderate climate because they are sinks for carbon dioxide. Wetlands limit the damage effects of waves, convey and store floodwater, trap sediments and reduce population. With changes of water levels, wetlands can be terrestrial ecosystems and aquatic ecosystems, therefore the plants and animals in these areas are always adapting and changing. Wetlands are dissapearing all around the world because of what people are doing them. The creation of landfills and dikes can reduce the wetland ability to provide flood storage.

I believe that human actions that are destroying our ecosystems is wrong. We all need to work together and make this world a better place to live on instead of destroying it. Wetlands benefit plants and animals that live in the area and the more plants and animals we have, the better. We are killing animals and if we kill the animals and there are no wetlands to benefit the animals that are being killed it could decrease sustainability in the animals, as well as plants. Humans need to make sure that wetlands are not being destroyed.
- Constant change makes wetlands ecologically rich.
- They provide a habitat as well as spawning grounds for an extra-ordinary variety of creatures and nesting areas for migratory birds.
- Commercial and utilitarian functions.
- Wetlands limit the damaging effects of waves, convey and store floodwaters, trap sediment and reduce population.
- Wetlands are shallow-water systems, or areas where water is at or near the surface for some time.
- Wetlands exist next to freshwater rivers, streams and lakes and their flood plains.
- They are sources of lucrative, harvests of wild rice, fur bearing animals, fish and shellfish.
- 1/2 regions in every state have been destroyed, except Alaska and Hawaii.
- Man made structures/buildings in these areas can reduce flood storage, destroy habitats and reduce water purification.
- Animals and plants have adapted to the changing environments of wetlands.
- HR 1330 is a bill that treats wetlands like static water systems, allowing landowners to decide what year an area is considered a wetland.
- Without room to move, wetlands can disappear.
- Barriers prevent wetland plants and animals from migrating up and down gentle slopes.
- Watershed and pumping of groundwater can destroy the wetlands.
