On the Termination of Species
A: List the major ideas, concepts or key points- point by point
B: Summarize the AUTHOR’s main point or idea- at LEAST 1-2 paragraphs
The authors main point in this article is to inform us that thousands of species are disappearing each year. Many animals are dying because of pollution, climate change, etc. All of the reasons that animals are dying... leads to what humans are doing. Humans are the led cause of animals deaths. We are cutting down their shelter and food for our needs that we don't necessarily need. The author wants us to be informed on this so we can make the right choices and help these animals and ourselves to be able to live in a healthy environment. A recent estimate was 27,000 species would go extinct every decade, we need to make a goal to stop this from happening.
C: Write a reaction paragraph to the article stating your own thoughts on the topic, using specific citations from the article to support your views
After reading this article, I think that discovering the rate of extinction is very important. We need to help our animals because if one species goes down, it can take another with the also when they go extinct. We shouldn't be doing things such as cutting down forests or using palm oil instead of vegetable oil. There are many alternative things we can do and these things will have a better impact on our animals. Although, like scientists I also believe that instead of endangered species or threatened hotspots, saving evolution is more important.
So What?:
We need to do something about this and save our animals before they're all gone. We are making them go extinct so we need to stop what we're doing and help them.
Says Who?
What if...?
We didn't do anything:
If we didn't do anything to stop animals from becoming extinct this world would become just a big ball of pollution because we would be doing what we are doing now... polluting earth. We need to stop before all of the animals become extinct.
What does this remind me of?
This reminds me of the Coyote Lab because it showed that if one specie disappeared then many of the would be affected by it.
- Many scientists are beginning to be grateful that they won't be around to see many species disappear off of the Earth
- Some scientists believe that instead of endangered species or threatened hotspots, saving evolution is more important
- Comparing the past 400 years with previous 65 million unavoidably assume that current extinction rate will be sustained over millions of years.
- Many scientists before 2000 believed that a very high number of species would go extinct by the year 2000
- Researchers believe that only less than 4% of all species that have ever lived are fossilized
- Habitat and species as well as population are all proportional, meaning less area would mean less species
- If evolution does not do the trick, artificial selection may help preserve or destroy species
- Deforestation is at a rate of less than 1% a year
- A recent estimate was 27,000 species would go extinct every decade
- Attempts to find current extinction rate are fraught with more uncertainties
- For every species falsely said to be absent, there may be hundreds or thousands that vanish unknown to science
- When habitats shrink and population are wiped out, at a rate of 16 million a year, it could be a time bomb
- We can only know if the rate of extinction has increased or not by looking at the natural extinction rate and comparing it to the current extinction rate
- About 10 million species, 25,000 of them will suffer a premature extinction
- If those species is only in that area it will go extinct, however if it is found elsewhere, it will not
- Rate of recent planet extinction was compared in four similar regions and found that the most disturbed area had the lowest rate.
- Human induced extinctions will fall over time
- Leave conservationists with less sense of urgency with handful of weak political and economic arguments. Force them to realize that species in trouble today are already members of the doomed
