Human Population Grows Up
Key Points:
The author is trying to inform the world on how much the population on Earth has grew throughout the 1960's to today in the present. The Earth's population is growing more rapidly than ever in one year and we need to stop it. We don't know exactly the carrying capacity for the Earth is and we shouldn't want to find out but at this rate of birth rates, we will. There will be no resources left and it will leave everyone for dead if we reach that point. The key to solving this problem is to inform everyone of it and leave it up to them to make the right decision and have the right amount of children which would probably be the replacement rate. We need to educate the poor countries so they are aware and don't have children because they are going to be born in very bad environments and could die because of diseases such as HIV/AIDS that might be going around in the country. Without the proper medical care the babies can die. Populations in poorer countries are estimated to have a higher population growth rate than in rich countries like the United States and this is because birth rates are high. With this knowledge, of the population and what we can do to stop this problem and make the world's population steady, in all people's minds that we can make this world a place everyone wants to live in without suffering like they do in poor countries with a high population and no resources.
My Thoughts:
I think this article is very interesting and has a lot of information on this important topic. I cannot believe that Indian women have 12 children! That is just outrageous because they cannot even take care of themselves so how are they going to provide for a baby, let alone 12 babies. We really need to take charge and educate all of these poor countries on the Earth's population because if we don't soon, it can be too late. No one knows what the Earth's capacity is but if we keep going at this birth rate then we will find out and it will not be pretty. The only way possible for fixing this is to educate people. Our descendants will look back on the late 1960 speak as the most significant demographic event in the history of the human population even though those of us who lived through it did not recognize it at the time. Let's educate and make this world's population a steady one so we can all live healthy with enough resources.
- The average life span grew from perhaps 30 years at the beginning of the 20th century to more than 65 years at the beginning of the 21st century
- Until 2007 rural people outnumbered urban people. After 2007, urban people will outnumber rural people
- Everyone 45 or older has seen more than a doubling of human numbers from 3 billion to 6.5 billion from 1960 to 2005
- Before 2000, young people always outnumbered old people
- Human population never grew with such speed before the 20th century and is never again likely to grow with such speed
- Dramatic fall since 1970 of global population growth rate to 1.1 or 1.2% a year today resulted primarily from choices by billions of couples around the world
- Changes in composition and dynamics escape public notice
- Crossover in proportions of young and old reflects both improved survival and reduced fertility. Average life span grew from 30 years at beginning of 20th century to more than 65 years at beginning of 21st century.
- Proposed Social Security reforms in the U.S., however, often fail to recognize the fundamental population aging, while debates in Europe and the U.S. over immigration policy often overlook the differences in population growth rates between these regions and their southern neighbors.
- Constraints imposed by nature are dealt with elsewhere
