Monster Goldfish Found in Lake Tahoe
In this article by Tanya Lewis and Live Science, published by Scientific American on Thursday, February 21,2013, it informs us on the gigantic goldfish finding in Lake Tahoe. The fish ending up in the lake was said to most likely be by aquarium owners dumping it there. The goldfish was nearly 1.5 feet long and 4.2 pounds. Goldfish are invasive species that could interfere with the ecosystem in Lake Tahoe. Invasive fish excrete nutrients that cause algal blooms, which threaten to muddy Tahoe's clear water. Aquarium dumping is common but is taking a toll on native wildlife. A survey was conducted and 20%-90% of fish keepers surveyed in Texas admitted to dumping fish. There are many reasons that aquarium owners decide to dump and the two main reasons are the size and aggressiveness of the fish. Dumping fish can have a big effect on the ecosystem and for Lake Tahoe, it is the beauty of the clear water becoming muddy by algal blooms because of invasive fish.
I chose this article because I have never seen a gigantic goldfish such as the picture above. What is interesting to me about this article is that the goldfish is an invasive specie that could interfere with the ecosystem of Lake Tahoe. Goldfish can cause the clear Tahoe water to become muddy. The finding of the goldfish in Lake Tahoe was a good thing because now that we know the cause of the specie getting there, we can put a stop to it.
I believe the next step to do is to try and stop goldfish and other species that end up in lakes or places where they do not belong from getting there. Most of the time they end up there by aquarium owners dumping them there because the size and the aggressiveness of the fish. We should try to have them stop dumping fish or be more careful of the unwanted fish and other animals that they are dumping because t can have a big effect on the ecosystem they are invading.
