"The Materials Economy" is the system of extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. This video explains each part of the system and how if is effecting our planet. Extraction is exploiting natural recourses. We are using too much stuff and trashing the planet. One-third of our natural resources is gone because humans are overusing them. Every minute we are loosing 2,000 trees a minute, this is equivalent to 7 football fields filled with trees that are being cut down every minute because humans are cutting them down. Production is the use of energy to mix toxic materials in with natural recourses to make toxic products that we use everyday. Four billion pounds of toxic chemicals are being put into things that we use daily every year. This situation has gotten so bad that babies are getting the highest amount of toxic chemicals just from being breast fed. We continue to put toxic chemicals into things such as furniture in case a fire occurs then it slows the fire down by a couple seconds, this can be down without the use of chemicals. Distribution is selling toxic contaminated stuff as quickly as fast as companies can to keep prices down so that people keep buying and inventory keeps moving. Externalized cost is the cost that we are paying that does not pay for the product to be made, it is the cost we pay to buy things that harm us more than it is actually worth. Consumption is the main part of the system in which is priority of the government and industries. Advertisements are put up and shown to make people but in 6 months only 1% of it we will still be using. Without us buying the toxic junk, the system will go bad. Disposal is where everything goes when it is being thrown away. A person throws away 4.5 pounds of garbage a day and all this trash ends up incinerated and put in landfills or just goes straight to the landfills. The chemicals from the toxic product when being burned are being put in the air and causing air pollution. We can reduce the amount of trash being burned and put into land fills everyday by reducing, reusing, and recycling the garbage. This system is a "cradle cradle, grave" system, everything is being made but ending up in the trash when it most likely can be reused. There are varies ways to stop this system and it is important to start now before it becomes too late.
